At 40|40 Adventures we are passionate about travel and giving you a real insight to the areas we travel to. On this unique experience David Gill, our CEO, will show you his Cornwall. Born and raised in the Duchy, we can give you the insights and introduction to a land steeped in history. Having also run a pub in the Duchy and worked in the craft beer industry in the United States, David is able to share with you some of his favorite spots in Cornwall. Using a combination of planes, trains, and cars, we will visit the birthplace of King Arthur and discover Cornwall’s rich geological and maritime history, all the while taking in some of the tastiest brews this side of the Atlantic.
DAY // 1
Today, we meet at the world-famous Paddington Station in London. Paddington Station has been the start of many adventures and this is one that you won’t want to miss out on. We will embark upon our train and make our way along the route of the Great Western Railway. The GWR features ground-breaking engineering works designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and is considered one of the most scenic rail journeys in the United Kingdom. We will pass through the ancient lands of Wessex, journey along the Exe Estuary and the amazing landscapes of the English Riviera. As we cross the River Tamar and enter Cornwall, we will be close to our home for the next week. At Bodmin Station we will meet our transportation and drivers for the week that will take us to our accommodation. We have hand selected elegant homes that will provide us with home comforts during your adventure.
Welcome drinks will be served prior to a home-made dinner. The evening is free to relax and unwind, make new friends and discuss the week ahead.
DAY // 2
After breakfast, we will head off and explore the clifftops and beaches of North Cornwall. Boasting over 300 miles of diverse and spectacular scenery, the South West Coast Path ranks alongside New Zealand’s Milford Track, Chile’s Torres del Paine trek, and Alaska’s Chilkoot Trail as one of the world’s most awe inspiring hikes.
Over the day we will walk from Port Isaac to the ancient town and legendary home of King Arthur – Tintagel. After visiting the castle, we will take in our first brewery of the week, the award winning Tintagel Brewery. Established in 2009, the brewery uses power from its own turbine and water from the spring to produce delicious ales.
Returning to our home, we will have the opportunity to freshen up before we head to the opposite end of the Duchy. There, we will meet at the Minack Theatre for a performance of Proms on the Cliff. Tonight, we will be treated to a picnic supper as we dine above the cliffs and take in traditional British Proms music in one of the most spectacular outdoor arenas you are likely to experience in your life!
DAY // 3
Today, we are sticking with the most southern part of the United Kingdom and exploring the Lizard Peninsula, which juts out into the Atlantic Ocean and is highly exposed to the elements. After breakfast, we will drive down to the Lizard Village and trek along the cliff paths to Kynance Cove, which features prominently in the TV Show Poldark. Our brewery for today is located in an old Cold War bunker.
DAY // 4
Cornwall is famous for its beaches and no adventure in Cornwall is complete without trying out the sport of surfing. Getting kitted out in wetsuits and venturing into the Atlantic breakers is an awesome experience. Our adrenaline packed day will also introduce you to the coastline from a different perspective with a coasteering session. Once our maritime activities are over, we will take the opportunity to visit a hop farm and sample a few beers at a brewery in the coastal town of Padstow.
DAY // 5
This morning we will explore the rugged and haunting Bodmin Moor. Hiking up to the highest point in the Duchy Brown Willy offers spectacular views across Cornwall. After lunch, we head to the south coast. Cornwall has been home to many long-standing industries including the mining of China Clay. In the early 2000s, The Eden Project was developed on a former pit, boasting three biomes with different environments and flora from all over the world. We will end the day at St Austell Brewery and sampling some of their beers.
DAY // 6
A big day today! We will head down to Falmouth where we will discover castles built under Henry VIII, learn about Cornwall’s famous maritime heritage, and even take to the waters for a sail around the Carrick Roads. A fish and chip supper will then prepare us for the opening night of the Falmouth Beer Festival. With over 240 ales and beers along with live music, this is going to be a fun night!
DAY // 7
We will take it a bit easy today. Driving down the beautiful Atlantic Coast our first stop will be the artists town of St Ives. Take some time to explore the small streets and numerous art galleries. We will then blast away some of the cobwebs as we walk from Sennen to Lands End, the tip of the United Kingdom. On our way back to our home we will stop at Skinners Brewery in Truro. Our final evening together will be in a Cornish pub.
DAY // 8
After breakfast we will depart for the railway station and our train back to London.
